Last week, I met with two highly skilled professionals keen to promote their services. But something was holding each of them back. For one, it was procrastination – you know, the cycle of “I’ll get to it tomorrow.” There’s a Spanish name for that: mañana. But as you know – mañana never comes…
For the other, it was the fear of rejection (but I’ll talk about it in my next post).
When I asked him some of these questions, a penny dropped. He started realising what was really going on. He saw how changing his focus could bring back his inspiration, knowing why it is so important for him, and feeling how it can change so much for him when it’s actually done – and with that inspiration, he’s now on his way to moving things forward.
If you’re caught in procrastination, try reflecting on these questions:
Does this goal truly inspire me? Without that spark, it’s tough to begin – so find that inspiration inside you again.
What’s really stopping me? Sometimes, identifying hidden fears or doubts can be eye-opening and a starting point to creating a change.
What’s the cost of inaction? Visualising the impact of waiting can be a powerful motivator – Take it all the way to how big it can be.
How will I feel when it’s done? Focusing on the end result can provide the push you need.
What’s one small step I can take today? Even a small action can start the momentum – so take that small step right away.
I’d love to hear from you – What do you do, to get yourself moving forward rather than procrastinating?
