Making Something Out of Nothing

Are you feeling the overwhelm of the New Year?

You know that feeling when you come back from the holidays (for some it was possibly earlier in the week), and suddenly it’s like, “New Year, New Me” pressure on overload? Everyone’s talking about resolutions, fresh starts, to-do lists and crushing goals. Meanwhile, you’re just trying to figure out if it’s still socially acceptable to eat leftover holiday cookies for breakfast.

Well, here’s my take: skip the overwhelm. After a relaxing holiday - and a road trip full of unexpected insights - I’ve come to believe that making something out of nothing is the way to go this year. Let me explain.

During my road trip, I experienced in-person an example of how someone who had mastered the art of turning “nothing” into something incredible, is doing so during the trip…

Without giving away their “secret” - it hit me - their “nothing” wasn’t really nothing. It was their strength, their talent, their unique thing. They just didn’t label it as valuable as it was to others. So, for them it was “nothing”.

And that got me thinking (because apparently, even on vacation, my brain refuses to stop working): how often do we do this to ourselves?

How often do we overlook our own natural abilities because they feel so normal, so effortless, that we assume they’re no big deal? Meanwhile, those same “meh” things could be absolute gold to someone else.

So - this year, instead of overwhelming yourself with grand resolutions, what if you looked at what’s already there? What if it was easy?

What if, instead of trying to “start fresh,” you focused on uncovering the hidden strengths and talents you’ve been carrying all along? Those things you dismiss as “nothing” could be the key to something extraordinary.
