The #1 Key to Successful Negotiation

How do YOU negotiate? What if you could walk into your next high-stakes negotiation knowing you had a solution that would leave everyone winning?

That’s exactly what happened with one of my clients. She was on the verge of entering a negotiation that had her deeply concerned. She really wanted to get that purchase, but she already heard about others who tried to negotiate the price down and failed, since the seller has a very strong attachment to this sale.

The stakes were high, and the risk of losing a significant amount of money, or even the entire deal was very real. She felt the weight of the situation on her shoulders, her thoughts racing as she tried to figure out the best approach. In the preliminary meeting, the meeting room felt heavy with uncertainty, and the usual strategies that she could think of seemed inadequate.

During our coaching session, we dove deep into the situation. We peeled back the layers of fear and worry, and instead, focused on creativity and perspective. You could almost hear the gears in her mind shifting as we explored new ways to approach the negotiation. We didn’t just focus on the numbers; we looked at the motivations, needs, and desires of the other side. She began to see the negotiation not as a battle, but as an opportunity for collaboration. We came up with a very creative solution that will allow her to get what she wants, as well as get the other side what they truly wanted in the deeper levels of their needs.

As she walked into the negotiation room for the second time, this time equipped with the strategy and the solution path we discussed, she felt a sense of calm wash over her. She was armed not just with data and a solution, but with a fresh mindset. She could feel the difference as she spoke, her words flowing easily, and the energy in the room started to change. Instead of the usual back-and-forth, the conversation became more like a dance, with both sides moving in sync toward a common goal.

In the end, this win-win solution saved her tens of thousands of dollars. And more than that, the other party walked away feeling great about the agreement, respected and valued. She left that negotiation not just with her business intact, but with a newfound confidence and a deeper understanding of what’s possible when you think creatively, and taking care of both sides, not just her own.
